This Monday, we discussed about the film 'Dog day afternoon'. We talked about what would be different if the same incident happens nowadays. So, I imagined the Dog Day Afternoon version 2010.
1. There should be someone (among the hostages) who uses his/her cell phone to contact with people outside.
2. Media would be more sensational. News would broadcast not only what is happening in real time, but also about the private information of Sonny and Sal; about their backgrounds, parents, and friends, which people actually do not 'have to' know, to speculate why they are doing this.
3. Twitter and facebook would contribute a lot to this incident. People would find out Sonny and Sal's (if they have one), and try to find out more personal information about them. The more media reports sensational news, the more people would be interested in them personally. Also, as Sonny is good-looking (in the film, of course), people might make fun of this, giving him a nickname like 'the handsome theif. These are misleading roles of media, since people, especially children, could have a wrong concept of criminals; they are not bad, but heros who get a lot of attention to others). And, as someone said in class, Sal could access his twitter or facebook and say he is not a homosexual!
In my opinion, one of the film's messages is about the role of media. It shows that sensational reporting could distort the fact and the distortion could be worse as technology of media has developed (based on my imagination).
