In the media today there is always an overwhelming sense of having to include the homosexual population in order to have a more diverse cast including all sexualities and ethnicities. In movies like My Best Friend's Wedding, Object of my Affection and The Next Best Thing as we discussed in class, have a portrayal of gay men having some characteristics that might lead the viewer to believe that they might actually have second thoughts about their sexuality. However there never seems to be a medium, either the gay character is portrayed as "maybe" straight that might end up with a girl or the complete opposite--flamboyant sassy gays.
In most movies where the homosexual man is discrete or not obvious about his sexuality he is usually portrayed as the buff, oiled up gay without a shirt and glitter slapped onto his face. These gay men are shown as being "girly" using hand movement and high pitched voices as they dance to techno and play the best guy friend to girls who want to have that male opinion when they go shopping together while also have the security of not getting hit on by their gay friend.
Although the gay community is being represented at two extremes, it is one step closer at being completely represented in the media today.
