Sassy Gay Friend!

So today in class when we were talking about Will & Grace, My Best Friend's Wedding, and Object Of My Affection, it seemed like these movies portrayed the leading gay man with relatively heterosexual qualities. The leading gay men were not blatantly obvious about their sexuality. With the exception of Jack in Will & Grace, I wondered what the movies would be like if the leading men had been characterized as more flamboyant. The character from the "Sassy Gay Friend" videos from Youtube would be an interesting substitute for the leading men in the movies.

There are a few "Sassy Gay Friend" movies, each for Shakespeare stories. There is a "Sassy Gay Friend" for Hamlet, Romeo & Juliet, and Othello. In each one, when the girl is about to kill herself, her sassy gay friend comes by and saves the day. He talks her out of it and stops her from killing herself. Every girl needs her sassy gay friend right?

I started thinking about the limited spectrum for gay men in media, and I think, although it has gotten much better in recent years, there is still a limited representation. For straight men, it seems as if there is a wide gamut for how they are represented. But, since gay men have only recently become socially acceptable on a large scale, maybe as time passes and generations pass, it will become a norm for gay males to represented in every way possible.
