Google = Happiness Ever After?

Google recently aired a commercial during the superbowl that showed a series of phrases being typed into its famous search box. The phrases progress from "studying abroad in Paris" to "impress a french girl" to "jobs in paris" to "how to assemble a crib". The commercial insinuates that by using google, you can go to paris to study abroad, meet an amazing french girl, move to paris to work, get married, and have beautiful french children. Google personifies its search engine and portrays it as something that will make your life wonderful. Google is playing into our mentality that consuming products will offer self-fulfillment. They are playing off of our ideas of perfection and making it seem more attainable by simply using Google. And Google is something we can continue to consume as we continually search for satisfaction.

But, Google has also been affected by genericide in a way. Google has expanded their original search engine into an empire, with email and also the ability to text google your search inquiries. The term "google" is often attributed to any kind of search, whether or not it is specifically using Google's online search engine. It has become a generic type of search. But, it seems that the ad is trying to show that you will only find your true love and happiness ever after by only using Google.
