Gays in Media

In these days, roles of gays and lesbians in media are becoming broadened and more viewers start to accept this new culture. In America, gays and lesbians are very acceptable and are not big issues to people. However, in Asian countries, they are still strange to people and have scruples about approaching them. Of course, they appear in media; however, their roles are very limited which makes people still have prejudice of them. In the late 1990s, there was a Korean sitcom called “three men, three women.” Each man and woman is couple, and there’s one left character, a gay. He’s a fashion designer in that sitcom and acts overtly like a real gay. His voice and tone is exactly like girls. In the sitcom, those three men are afraid of approaching him and becoming friends of him. The sitcom shows at that time there’s a stereotype against gays and gays’ roles are very limited. They are shown as they are like girls. However, in 2008, there is a gay movie called “Antique.” In the movie, four very handsome actors come out and act as gays. In the movie, unlike the sitcom in the past, gays’ roles are very broadened and they are depicted without any stereotypical jeering. They altogether are chefs and very famous among girls as they are handsome. They are competent, good looking, and popular. Gays in these days are more accepted like men and women are. There is a prejudice against gays and lesbians, but this prejudice is slowly disappearing through media which is responsible for reflecting social issues.
